Support

An answer,
not a ticket.

The essentials fit on this page: installing, updating the data, understanding what comes from where. And when that is not enough, a human reads your messages.

Getting started

Three steps before your first route.

Allow about fifteen minutes, the time it takes for your country's charts to install on the device.

1 · Install

Download the version for your system, open the package and launch the app. Android included; on iPad and iPhone, it will come through the App Store.

2 · Open your account

The account is the way in: it holds your flights, your aircraft and your subscription. Opening it needs a connection; after that, the app starts and flies without a network.

3 · Install the charts

Choose the world base map and the countries you need. Packages are verified, then installed in one go: never a half-installed chart.

One account opens up to four devices: plan on the computer, fly with the tablet.

Requirements

What it needs under the hood.

macOS
macOS 13.3 Ventura or later, Apple silicon Mac (M1 and later). Intel Mac version coming.
Windows
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
iPad and iPhone
iPadOS / iOS 16.4 or later, through the App Store (coming). Flight mode uses the device's GPS.
Android
Android 7 (API 24) or later, tablet or phone.
Disk space
About 1 GB for the world base map, then 0.5 to 2 GB per installed country, terrain included.
Network
Needed to open the account, install charts, and refresh weather, NOTAMs and aerodrome diagrams. Optional for flying.

Data

Where what you see comes from.

Each layer has a source and an update rhythm. The app always shows the current edition, and flags stale data rather than presenting it as fresh.

Aeronautical data
Aerodromes, airspaces, navaids and zones from openAIP exports, tracked on the 28-day AIRAC cycle. The active cycle is shown in the toolbar.
Base map
Vector map built on OpenStreetMap data, distributed in versioned packages: one world base map, then one package per installed country.
Terrain
Copernicus GLO-90 model (90 metres), used by the vertical profile, terrain monitoring and map hillshading.
Weather
ECMWF forecasts, processed and published several times a day. Forecast times already viewed remain readable offline; the others need the network.
TAF and METAR
Aerodrome observations and forecasts from NOAA's Aviation Weather Center, on demand.
NOTAMs
SIA flight briefing, for aerodromes and routes in France. Viewed online and included in the kneeboard.
Aerodrome diagrams
Drawn from OpenStreetMap geometry and openAIP attributes. They are not the official VAC charts, which remain available separately from the aerodrome sheet.

Check before every flight

None of these sources exempts you from consulting the official publications and the NOTAMs in force. MAPAERO prepares the flight; it does not certify it.

FAQ

The questions that keep coming up.

Does the app really work without a network?

Yes, once the charts are installed and the account has been opened at least once. The local database is the source of truth: chart, route, aircraft sheet, vertical profile, printing and flight mode work offline. A connection is needed, however, for installing new charts, syncing, weather you have not viewed yet, TAF/METAR, NOTAMs, and the diagram of an aerodrome you have never displayed before.

What happens if I lose the network mid-flight?

The chart keeps displaying, the route stays computed and flight mode follows the GPS. Weather, on the other hand, is limited to what has already been downloaded: forecast times viewed before departure remain readable, the others are missing, and the app says so instead of pretending to be up to date. So prepare on the ground whatever you will want to read again in flight.

Do I lose my flights if I change device?

No. Flights, aircraft sheets, user waypoints placed on the chart and your working preferences are tied to the account and show up on a new device. Installed charts and caches belong to the machine and need to be reinstalled on the new device.

Can I import or export a flight?

Yes, in the app's JSON format, one flight or a whole list. The format stays compatible with flights created by earlier versions.

How do I know whether my aeronautical data is current?

The current AIRAC cycle is always shown in the top toolbar. When a new cycle is available, the app says so and offers the update; until it is done, the indicator turns amber.

Does the app replace the official VAC charts?

No. The built-in diagrams are drawn from open data: they help you picture the aerodrome and place it on the chart, but they carry no official standing. The aerodrome sheet gives access to the official VAC chart, which remains the reference.

Can I use MAPAERO on several devices?

Yes, with the same account, up to four active devices across all platforms. That is the intended use: plan on the computer, fly with the tablet. The device list is visible in the app, and removing one frees its slot immediately — handy after a reinstall or a change of machine.

Does flight mode use a lot of battery?

It uses the GPS continuously, so more than simply viewing the chart. On flights longer than an hour, plan for on-board power, as with any navigation app.

Is my data used for anything else?

No. Only your flights, aircraft sheets, user waypoints and an explicit list of working preferences are transferred, solely to give them back to you. Caches, installed charts and device settings never leave the device.

How do I get a new version?

You have nothing to do. On Mac, Windows and Android, the app checks for a new version at startup and offers to install it in one click, never during a flight. The data follows its own rhythm: when a new AIRAC cycle or chart package is published, the app flags that too. The Download page is only needed for the first installation.
